Explore the abbey remains and gardens

Go beyond the Great Gate to see the extensive remains of the former abbey. English Heritage provides background on the site and visitor information for understanding what survives.

The gardens and historic remains make a good focus for an unhurried visit. Follow current access information and leave time for the surrounding streets.

Visit St Edmundsbury Cathedral

The cathedral offers a different pace, with architecture, worship, music and visitor experiences. Check the current programme if you want a tour or are interested in a particular part of the building.

For a group visit, contact the cathedral before arranging the rest of the day. Confirm access and timings directly rather than assuming every space is always available.

Walk among the trees at Nowton Park

Nowton Park has landscaped grounds, an arboretum and walking trails, with the lime avenue among its best-known features. It is a useful choice when you want more outdoor time than a town-centre stroll offers.

Use the park map to choose a route and check facilities and parking before leaving. Different parts of the park are some distance apart, so plan for your group rather than trying to see everything.

Make an evening of the Theatre Royal

The Theatre Royal is a working theatre as well as an important historic playhouse. A performance or an advertised tour offers a different way to experience the town.

Check the current programme and visitor arrangements, then use the directory for somewhere to eat or another local stop before the show.

Plan the day around the places you choose

Opening times, event programmes and access arrangements can change. The official links above take you to the people who manage each place; check them before making a special trip.

Pick a manageable route, leave room for a local shop or meal, and plan the return journey as well as the outward one.
